SMM

The Swiss Association for Music Medicine was founded in Berne on1 September 1997. The reason for setting up this association was the ever increasing number of musicians that have a specific problem which limits their capability for playing or even makes them unable to work. These musicians had no place to turn to for competent help and therapies.

Many therapies dealing with symptoms only are on offer and these lead mainly to short-term improvements and a long-term deterioration as the causes of the complaint are mostly not recognized.

It is not uncommon that musicians approach us, musicians who, because a competent diagnosis has never been made, have undergone so many therapies that they have given themselves up.

The goals of SMM are :

•  To work with selected doctors and therapists who have years of experience in this field. They also have a good knowledge of music.

•  Good interdisciplinary cooperation between doctors and therapists so that persons can be comprehended in a holistic way.

•  Promotes cooperation between music pedagogues, music schools, colleges of music and orchestras to offer prevention already in education and in professional life.

•  Organizes professional lectures, further education seminars and symposiums.
